Biographical Data

Vic BehmVic Behm is a California artist currently painting in oils on canvas or gessoed masonite board. Vic is a realist with a wide range of subject matter. Although Vic is a realist painter he has also done several surrealistic paintings.

Vic has the extra ordinary talent of giving his paintings a “3-D”effect by gradually building up the colour and depth by using very thin glazes of oil paint. He also has an excellent eye for detail and sometimes will spend hours on just one detail in a painting in order to get it “just right” to capture that certain nostalgic feeling that many of his paintings display.

Born in Gilroy, California in 1946. Vic had always the desire to paint since childhood but actually started out as a musician at the age of 16 when he taught himself to play the electric bass guitar and then played in many various groups throughout the area playing mostly R&B and Jazz music. As a musician, Vic also had the opportunity to travel across the country where he saw many different areas both in the city and country which later inspired many of his paintings.

Vic began his painting career at the age of 29. As he did with music, Vic also taught himself how to paint, sometimes spending many long hours and nights doing still life studies and carefully observing how light and shadows affect colour and perception as well as mood and feelings.

Vic has showed and sold his work in several galleries throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Private collectors own many of his paintings. One of his paintings is owned by the Monterey, California post office in that city and is currently displayed there. Vic also spent the summer and early fall of 1981 in Plainsfield-Cornish, New Hampshire, where he was “Artist in residence” at the Maxfield Parrish estate and museum that was located there at the time.
